faulty gas hot water systems:
1Is your gas service down?
If you have a gas system, first check that the other gas appliances within the house (for example the gas cooktop) to see if the gas is running as normal. If there is no gas working on any appliance, you’ll need to contact your gas supplier as the problem is not isolated to your hot water system.

2Is your pilot light off?
Once you’ve determined that your problem is only affecting the hot water unit, check to see if the pilot light is on and working. The light can sometimes go out so if it’s not on, you’ll need to re-light it. Follow the instructions carefully. They’re usually located on the unit (tank) itself or in the hot water system’s instruction manual. If the pilot light is on, the rest of your gas appliances are working and you can’t see any other obvious reason why there is no hot water being produced, give us a call.

Problem solving
faulty electric hot water units:
1Did the fuse short?
Locate the main electrical board or circuit breaker and ensure the hot water switch has not been tripped. If is has, then first try to switch it back on. If it does not stay on you’ll need to replace the fuse.

2Is power being supplied to the unit?
If you’re able to turn the system back on or replace the fuse, monitor the pace of the meter. Compare the pace before and after returning power to the system. An increase in pace is usually a good sign and shows the system is taking up power and (hopefully) functional. Test the water temperature at the hot water tap closest to the unit itself. You may need to let the unit run for an hour or so to heat up enough water for a shower. If there is no obvious rise in temperature, or no increase in pace after you turned the system back on, it’s time to give us a call.
